Susan vs. Asparagus

Out of everything we received in our first share, the asparagus is what had me the most worried. When we saw it, Gerry's reaction was "Great! Asparagus!" My reaction was more like "Crap. I have to eat ASPARAGUS? Already?"

But I promised I'd try it all, so try it I did. Gerry steamed it and had it all cut up in small pieces with plenty of butter.

Reaction? Upon taking the first bite, my first thought was, "It tastes like corn or popcorn or something." That might have been the butter. After a bit of chewing, when I actually tasted asparagus, it was a little weird for me. That was one of the tips. So next I tried some of the stem, and I was a lot more into that. I'm not quite an asparagus fan yet, but I will keep at it. Next time I think I want less butter, though. It was awfully rich.

Gerry on the other hand declared it the best asparagus he ever had!

Yay, Susan! Asparagus is a tough one too, it took me a long time to appreciate it. When you get even more daring, I have a great recipe for pasta with asparagus and cheese for you. :)

Thanks for the support, Desiree. I mean that. It's hard sometimes hearing everyone say, "Oh I LOVE xy or z." That makes me think I should just be able to sit down and tuck into it, no problem, but it just doesn't work like that. But the asparagus really wasn't as bad as I expected, and I will try again!

Susan, yeah you liked the asparagus! That is a great start. If you wanted it a little lighter you might like it roasted or grilled. Just toss it in a little olive oil and sprinkle it with some kosher salt then toss it on the grill for a few minutes or in the oven for about 10 minutes. If you like parmesean cheese you can grate a little bit on top then back into the oven for 5 minutes.

Vicky, I wouldn't say I LIKED it! :) I asked Gerry about roasting it--Wendy had mentioned it. He said it would have more true asparagus flavor if he steamed it. I wasn't sure that was a GOOD thing, but I let him do what he wanted. Next time, though? Roasted it is!

Looks yummy to me! Kudos to you for trying new things! My DH is like you in the veggie area and there are many mnay things he refuses to even try. Asparagus is one of them.
