Week V (Hello to our Ancient Roman Friends)

strawberries
tomatoes
baby bok choy
broccoli
snap peas
green onions
arrowhead cabbage
basil

Speaking only for myself, I am thrilled about the berries, the broccoli, the peas, and the basil. I'm even kind of interested in the cabbage, and I'm glad to give bok choy another try (with soy sauce this time). However, I am seriously rethinking my "I'll try it all" now that tomatoes are in. I HAVE NEVER EATEN A TOMATO! Not even a bite. Help.

I've been really jealous of your veggies the past few weeks! We've been struggling along with mostly lettuce and some cooking greens. I did get to experience rhubarb and rutabaga, but I'd love to get some of your potatoes (the colors are amazing), asparagus, or broccoli. We did finally get peas, so I'm happy about that!

It took me until last year to learn to like tomatoes. I tend to only eat them cut in salad, on sandwiches, or cut small and cooked in a pan with some chicken. I think I'm going to need to learn some more ways to eat them this summer, or learn how to make spagetti sauce. So will your first tomato taste be raw or cooked? I think I'd go raw--it avoids the slimy factor! Hope you like it!

Couple of thoughts on the tomatoes-
- I like them sliced, not quartered or eighthed or whatever. It's a seed/texture thing.
-Try a thin slice of one on that bread you made. A bit of salt, and some slivered basil, even. I think you are not a mayo person, but if you are, a little on the bread is lovely. Olive oil would be good, too.
- I'm not a fan of them refrigerated. Again, the texture, and the taste does suffer.
-caprese salad- sliced tomato, basil leaves, and fresh mozzeralla cheese drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
-Sun dried tomatoes are great, but you can dry them in the oven, too. Savory fruit leather.
A GOOD tomato is really a wonderful thing, and summer is the time to eat them. They kinda suck the rest of the year :)

Laine, where are you located? Someone else mentioned their CSA gets off to a slow start, because they live up north. Ours has taken a few hits from the weather.

The potatoes are a happy surprise for me. Something I already love!

Regarding tomatoes...I figure I'll try a little raw, but then we were talking about putting some slices onto a pizza. How intimidating can they be when they're surrounded by dough and cheese?

Thanks for the advice, Jeanne! It sounds like I'm not the only one with tomato issues.

You're right, I'm not a mayo person and doubt I'll ever get there, but on bread with salt sounds like something I can do. And I'll heed your advice about slicing, not chunking.

Gerry would NEVER put a tomato in the fridge, so you don't have to worry about that!

I had mentioned the caprese salad to Ger. Along with the tomatoes, we got a big bunch of basil this week. Unfortunately, something happened to it, and it went all droopy on me. Gerry said he's not too keen on un-melted mozz, so we'll see.

I feel like we should take a video of this historic tomato tasting! :)

I'm actually in PA also--State College. It doesn't seem that far north, but I think we are a bit behind you. I get this weeks share tomorrow, so we'll see if things get better. I'm mostly just looking forward to more peas!
